05 October 2015 – The Philippines is actively taking part in a historic work on the development of indicators to measure global progress on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction’s (SFDRR’s) seven agreed targets, as well as on the updating of terminology relating to disaster risk reduction (DRR).
The work on the development of indicators and terminology on DRR is being done by an open-ended intergovernmental expert working group on indicators and terminology (OEIWG), composed of Member States, Observers of the General Assembly, Intergovernmental Organizations and other entities, relevant UN agencies and stakeholders.
The Philippines is represented in the first formal session of the OEIWG, which was from September 29 to 30, by Deputy Director General Margarita Songco of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Ms. Vivian R. Ilarina, Division Chief of Expenditure Accounts at the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) and Ms. Susana G. Juangco, Chief of the Education and Training Division at the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).
Upon adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the General Assembly established, in its Resolution 69/284 of June 03, an open-ended intergovernmental expert working group (OEIWG) on indicators and terminology relating to disaster risk reduction to develop indicators to measure global progress on the Framework's seven agreed targets. The OEIWG is also considering an update of disaster risk reduction terminology.
Pursuant to that resolution, the OEIWG will have to hold three sessions in Geneva, with informal meetings as needed. Work will conclude by December 2016 and its report will be submitted to the General Assembly for consideration. END
