05 October 2015 – The Philippines presented its experience in the development of sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the informal meeting of the open-ended intergovernmental expert working group (OEIWG) on indicators and terminology relating to disaster risk reduction last September 28 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva.

Ms. Vivian Ilarina, Division Chief of Expenditure Accounts of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), represented the Philippines in the panel and spoke about the country’s challenges and opportunities in developing indicators (citing in particular the development then of indicators for MDGs), as well as the lessons learned by the Philippines, and relating them in addressing the challenges in developing an international monitoring system. She also briefly touched on the implication of global targets and indicators for national and local DRR strategies having targets and indicators.

The informal meeting of the OEIWG was conducted in order to help the members of the OEIWG identify key and strategic issues and priorities that may be taken on by the OIEWG in its programme of work. It may be recalled that upon adoption of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the General Assembly established, in its Resolution 69/284 last June 03, an OEIWG on indicators and terminology relating to disaster risk reduction to develop indicators to measure global progress on the Framework's seven agreed targets. The OEIWG is also considering an update of disaster risk reduction terminology.

Experts from Member States attended the informal meeting. Also present were stakeholders from civil society organizations, the private sector, local government, scientific institutions, as well as to the UN system entities. END
