Two Filipinos Selected for Special IPCC Report
23 August 2017 GENEVA — Two Filipinos were among the 106 experts selected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to write its Special Report on the Ocean and Cryosphere in a Changing Climate, which is expected to help governments understand and better deal with the adverse impacts of climate change.
Mr. Gil Suico Jacinto from the Marine Science Institute was selected as a Lead Author for the fifth chapter on "Changing Ocean, Marine Ecosystems, and Dependent Communities" while Ms. Lourdes Tibig from the Climate Change Commission was selected as a Lead Author for the succeeding chapter on "Extremes, Abrupt Changes and Managing Risks."
They were chosen from 519 individuals nominated by IPCC member-countries and observer organizations. The selection criteria included scientific, technical and socio-economic expertise, geographical representation, gender balance, and relevant IPCC experience.
The IPCC decided to prepare the special report in April 2016 as part of ongoing efforts to help governments make policy decisions strongly informed by scientific evidence. The report is expected to be finalized by September 2019.
