GENEVA 04 March 2019 — The Philippines shared its initiatives on strengthening localization in disaster response at a roundtable discussion on “Localisation in Disaster Response: Lessons Learned and Good Practices in the Asia Pacific,” held on 06 February 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.
Regional Director Minda Morante of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said during the roundtable that to further strengthen the country’s institutional capacity, the OCD through the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is focused on strengthening the country’s capacity-building activities particularly on the 14 basic sectors of the National Anti-Poverty Commission, namely artisanal fisherfolk, farmers and landless rural workers, urban poor, indigenous peoples, workers in the informal sector, persons with disabilities, women, children, and among others.
She further added that local government units at all levels are mandated to set aside five percent of their budgets to disaster risk reduction-related programs and activities.
Regional Director Morante led the Philippine delegation that attended the Humanitarian Networks and Partnership Week (HNPW) in Geneva, Switzerland from 04 to 08 February 2018. The HNPW is an annual global gathering of humanitarian actors, including governments and stakeholders such as international humanitarian and non-governmental organizations, that aim to discuss humanitarian issues of common concern.
