GENEVA 12 March 2019 – On the occasion of International Women’s Day and the centenary of the League of Nations, the Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, represented by Deputy Permanent Representative Maria Teresa Almojuela, joined 22 other permanent missions in convening a discussion on strengthening women’s role in peace and multilateralism at the margins of the 40th Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 08 March 2019.

Ambassador Almojuela underlined women’s participation and leadership in Philippine peace process mechanisms, citing the comprehensive national framework as embodied in the Philippine National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security 2017-2022.

The Deputy Permanent Representative also pointed out that efforts to raise the profile of women in peace and security processes have taken root in the region, citing the adoption by ASEAN Leaders of the “Joint Statement on Promoting Women, Peace and Security in ASEAN” during Philippines’ chairmanship in 2017, which called for the integration of gender perspectives in all conflict prevention initiatives and strategies, and the launch this year of the ASEAN Women for Peace Registry through the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation.

The event highlighted accomplishments in promoting the role of women in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, and challenges to reinforce the global commitment to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1325, the Beijing Platform of Action and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The event featured a distinguished group of panelists comprising of the Permanent Representatives of Jordan, Austria, Moldova as well as officials of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the University of Peace, and was attended by over 80 participants. END
