GENEVA 09 November 2018 — The Philippine Consulate General in Geneva began free French classes for overseas Filipinos, as part of efforts to enhance their skills and help them better adjust to life in Switzerland.
“The Philippine Consulate General and Ugnayang Bayan, the umbrella organization of Filipino associations in the Swiss cantons of Geneva and Vaud, worked together to create a program that we hope will have a direct and positive impact on the quality of life of our kababayan,” said Ambassador Evan Garcia, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the UN and Other International Organizations in Geneva.
Volunteer professionals from the Filipino Community designed a program that uses a practical approach to teaching and learning French, focusing on everyday situations and practical conversations. Classes began on 13 October and will continue for seven more Saturdays.
“Especially for undocumented Filipinos who wish to take advantage of the offered pathway of the Canton of Geneva for regularization, the classes will supplement their learning and increase their chances of passing the French language exam administered as part of the assessment process,” he added, referring to Operation Papyrus.
Operation Papyrus was launched by the Canton in Geneva in February 2017 to give migrants an opportunity to receive residency permits. Undocumented migrants who have lived in Geneva for a number of years, are financially independent, and are able to speak French are qualified to apply.
Consul Arnel G. Talisayon noted the huge turnout for the first day, with around 50 students signing up for the lessons.
“We have received more offers from Filipino French speakers who are willing to volunteer to teach and help their fellow Filipinos. The community spirit is alive and well in Geneva and Vaud,” he said. END
