PHL Ambassador to the UN in Geneva Unanimously Elected as Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council

16 January 2018 GENEVA — Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Evan P. Garcia, was unanimously elected as Vice President of the UN Human Rights Council (UN HRC) at the meeting of the Council on January 10. He will represent the Asia Pacific Group in UN HRC Bureau, the leadership body of the UN HRC.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter S. Cayetano welcomed the election of Ambassador Garcia to the UN Human Rights Council. He said: “Having Ambassador Garcia in the leadership body of the UN Human Rights Council is consistent with the Philippines’ long standing policy of active engagement in the field of human rights.”
“More importantly, this is a strong affirmation of the high regard and trust in the leadership of the Philippines in the field of human rights by the UN member states, in general, and the 47 of UN HRC member states, in particular.”
The UN Human Rights Council is the leading organ of the UN for the promotion, protection and fulfillment of human rights. It is composed of 47 UN member states elected to serve in the Council for a renewable term of three years. The Philippines is finishing its term with the UN HRC this year. END
