15 June 2017 GENEVA — Officials and personnel of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and other International Organizations and the Philippine Mission to the World Trade Organizations in Geneva held a simple ceremony on June 12 to celebrate the Philippines’ 119th Independence Day.

“Let us take inspiration from our forebears who valiantly fought and offered their lives so we may have the liberties that we enjoy today. Let us pay homage to their heroism by preserving our sovereignty and performing our own civic rights and responsibilities,” said President Rodrigo Roa Duterte in his message read by Ambassador Evan P. Garcia, Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva.

Ambassador Garcia stressed that Filipinos overseas, including officials and personnel in the two Philippine Missions, should always remember the gift of freedom by ensuring they all perform their roles in nation-building.

Messages by the Secretaries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, and Labor and Employment were also read during the ceremony.

Filipino communities worldwide hold regular activities to celebrate Philippine Independence. Embassies, Consulates and Missions overseas annually organize celebratory events in June to celebrate Philippine independence. In Geneva and Vaud, the Mission/Consulate had joint activities with the Filipino community and held the traditional diplomatic reception.
