Science and Technology Secretary Visits Cern

11 May 2017 GENEVA, SWITZERLAND – Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña (right), met with Professor Emmanuel Tsesmelis (left), Senior Physicist and Head of Relations with Associate Members and Non-Member States; and, Professor Albert De Roeck (middle), Senior Research Scientist for Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Experiment of the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva on May 09, to discuss how to intensify research collaboration between Philippine universities and CERN.

Secretary de la Peña expressed interest in linking up Philippine physicists and engineers with CERN’s research programs, including in new materials and applications on the medical sciences.  Three Filipino scientists are among the thousands of engineers and scientists participating in CERN’s Large Hadron Collider experiment. Prof. Tsesmelis said the biggest expansion of CERN’s cooperation is taking place in Asia Pacific and he welcomes the Philippines’ more active presence in CERN research programs.
