19 April 2016 - Former Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Special and Ocean Concerns Jose S. Brillantes was elected as Chairman of the UN Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (CMW) during the ongoing 24th session of the Committee from April 11 to 22.
The Committee elected Undersecretary Brillantes as the Chairman of the CMW until 31 December 2017.
Ambassador Cecilia B. Rebong, Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations Offices in Geneva welcomed the election of former Undersecretary Brilllantes as Chairman of the CMW stating that “This is an honor not only to Undersecretary Brillantes but also for the Philippines.”
Ambassador Rebong also stated that “it is also a recognition of the high priority the Philippines places on protecting the rights and promoting the welfare of Filipino migrant workers.”
The CMW is composed of a body of 14 independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families by its State parties. END
