Geneva

24 September 2014 - The ASEAN Committee in Geneva celebrated the Foundation Day of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with a photo exhibit and luncheon reception featuring cuisine from all ASEAN countries on September 9 at the Palais des Nations (Palace of Nations), United Nations Office in Geneva.

The event was graced by Mr. Michael Moller, Acting Director General of the United Nations Office in Geneva (UNOG), and attended by members of the diplomatic corps and UN Secretariat Officials and Staff. Mr. Moller paid tribute to the achievements of ASEAN,  the rich cultural and culinary heritage and  the natural beauty of the Southeast Asian Region. He likewise welcomed the active role that ASEAN Member States play in Geneva from promotion of human rights, to conflict prevention and disarmament, labor, trade and other issues and the strong ASEAN voice in the discussions of the post-2015 Development Agenda.

The photo exhibit showcased the rich history of ASEAN as an organization, as well as the  culture and tradition and sceneries of each ASEAN member country

Photos provided by the Philippine Mission to the United Nations were those of President Corazon Aquino, first female Chairman of ASEAN, hosting the 1987 ASEAN Summit; the pristine white sand and blue waters of Boracay; and the happy and beautiful smiles of the participants at the Sinulog Festival of Cebu.

The theme “Unity in Diversity,” which amply describes ASEAN, was emphasized by the variety of cuisine that the Permanent Missions presented in their respective uniquely decorated tables.

The Philippine table was decorated with a North Luzon flavor: with distinctive hand-woven fabrics from the Ifugao blended with the Vigan hispañola fans.

The Philippines served chicken adobo, cassava cake and leche flan.

This is the first time after many years that the ASEAN Committee in Geneva has decided to celebrate ASEAN Day. This year’s event was held under the chairmanship of the Permanent Mission of Myanmar to the United Nations and World Trade Organization. END
